Months ago, Chief got really into a National Geographic kids’ book all about sharks. He was fascinated by their gills, their fins, what they ate – he couldn’t get enough! Around this time, he saw pictures of his 2nd birthday party and quickly declared he wanted a “Shark Party in September!” He never wavered from his idea, so with about a month until his birthday I got to planning. His only requests? Blue balloons and a blueberry cake. Boy knows what he wants.
I made sure we had a menu that I could do in advance. There’s nothing worse than not getting to enjoy a party you planned. We ate pulled pork, hot dogs, spicy slaw, Chief’s favorite cheese sticks, a big ol’ bowl of fruit, raw veggies and hummus, and bags of chips.
A Blueberry Muffin Cake filled with blueberry buttercream and homemade streusel was the star of our dessert bar, but there were chocolate and strawberry cupcakes to choose from, or simple sugar cookies.
Kids played in the pool, threw bean bags into a giant shark’s mouth, made paper shark crowns, and danced for an hour through a bubble machine.
My best friend, Meghan, made shark cups that Chief and I filled with bubbles, rock candy, shark stickers, and tattoos to pass out to all of his friends.
Right before the party started, Chief found me alone in the bathroom and said “Thank you for Chief’s shark party. You’re the best mom ever!” In that moment I would’ve given him a shark party everyday for the rest of his life. That boy knows how to melt me.
Happy Birthday, sweet Chief.
