I feel pretty confident in saying that of all the months, October is the best. The temperatures are perfect, there are always things to do and events happening, the produce changes at the grocery store, football is in full-swing and basketball is starting, and I can make all our favorite pastas, soups, and braised meats. It really is the best.
We kicked off the month with his first trip to the dentist. He was a champ! He loved Dr. Sara and thought it was so fun to have his teeth brushed with the “tickley” toothbrush. Every time he brushes his teeth he now says “Dr. Sara be so proud of me?”
He visited Touch-A-Truck, a fundraiser for the Norman Public Library. Chief has been looking forward to this event for a year! He couldn’t wait to drive a trash truck, honk the horn on a mix truck, play on a school bus, and climb all over a front end loader. What a day!
He swung on The Musical Swings. The Musical Swings are a traveling art installation where each swing triggers a different note from a different instrument. If one swing is in use then it creates notes, but if you synchronize with the person next to you it creates a series of melodies. Chief didn’t care about melodies – he’d swing for a second then jump off… repeat.
He spent a day at Orr Family Farm. It was a chilly, rainy day, but we made the most of it. He rode on a hay ride, picked a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch, watched a chicken show, climbed on hay bales, and slid down huge tube slides.
We visited Pumpkinville…twice. Pumpkinville is a magical pumpkin exhibit at the Myriad Gardens in OKC. The pumpkin art installations are beautiful, but Chief goes for the ball pits, corn maze, slides, and games.
He carved his first pumpkin. Let’s be honest, I carved it. He “eeewwwed” at the pumpkin guts and poked holes in it claiming he was “carving.”
We took a trip to the zoo. He likes to go for the Children’s Zoo play area, but he always has 2-3 animals in mind that he MUST see. We make our rounds, see the animals he has at the top of his list, then spend the rest of our time going down slides or eating lunch in a treehouse.
He played on the big trucks in Chelsea. He drove an excavator, raised and lowered a fork lift, and honked the horn on a semi. Boy had a BIG time.
He’s officially potty trained! Like, I’m not nervous going out in public, he’ll tell us when he needs to go, hasn’t had an accident in a month, kind of potty trained.
He was Charlie Brown for Halloween. He proclaimed two months ago that he wanted to be Charlie Brown for Halloween. Our Aunt Joyce put a black stripe on a long sleeve shirt for us and as soon as he put it on he said “I got a rock…”
Things he said:
- “Arby’s. We have the meats.” In the deepest voice that could possibly come out of a three year old.
- Chief: “What make the clouds move?” Mom: “I’m not sure, bubba.” Chief: “Look it up on your phone.”
- When I asked him why he looked so sad: “Chief had a rough day. A ginger ale would help.”
- When I tell him something new or explain something after he asks a question, he’ll say “That’s interesting!” with his little index finger pointed straight up in the air.
- “Chief has a perfect idea!”
- When we visit a park or any place where other kids are present, Chief will say “Mom, I’m going to say ‘Hi’ to those kids.” I’ll tell him to go right ahead. He’ll march over to them and say “Hi! My name is Chief.” If they don’t answer he’ll say “My name is Chief” over and over again. At this point the kid is usually still standing there, but he’ll turn and look at me and say “Mom, this kid don’t hear Chief” and move onto the next one.
- We asked Chief one evening what he wanted for dinner, and without hesitation he exclaimed “Meat and Bread!” Chase and I looked at each other wide eyed like “how could he possibly remember that?!” Meat and Bread is a restaurant we ate at in Vancouver 2 MONTHS AGO. We haven’t talked about the restaurant since we were in Canada, we couldn’t believe his little mind remembered that.
