Month 24 of Motherhood – This is Two.

October 13, 2018 by Cassie Leave a Comment

2 years is a funny thing. It seems like such a short time Chief has been a part of our lives, but at the same time it feels like he’s ALWAYS been a part of our lives. I can remember a time before him, but that was a lifetime ago…and not nearly as fun.

Chief is wild. He loves to be outside, loves to play hide-n-seek, and loves collecting treasures in his numerous buckets. He’s a cheese aficionado, partial to pistachios, and loves a good sparkling water.

Baby Update…

He’s still big. He weighs over 31 lbs and stands at 37″ tall. If he tries REALLY hard, I swear he can grow to 52″, but only when he wants something that Mom and Dad think they put out of reach.

He’s talking non-stop and getting sassier by the day. Gosh, it’s funny. And irritating. He’s combining words regularly now and forming the smallest, bossiest sentences. Here are some highlights:

  • My favorite is when you ask him a question and he’ll look up like he’s thinking really hard and says “Mmmmmmm….No!” It’s so funny. And so naughty. We have to turn our heads so he doesn’t see us chuckling.
  • When he “cheers” his cup to yours, he says “Prost!” – the German word for “cheers.” He heard it once and latched on.
  • “Where Chief!?” With a very confused hand gesture as he’s hiding behind a pillow, has a shirt draped over his face, or has his eyes closed.
  • He’ll tell us all about the yard – ” Dada mow grass,” ” B (bunny) eat grass,” Bird is in the “burr house.”
  • He’s forming direct dictations – “Mom come.” “Mom pay (play).” “Mom push.” “Mom haaalllpppp!” When he wants to ride on Chase’s back, he says “Ride bear.” followed by “Again bear!“
  • He knows his dirty diapers stink and says “shew shew” every time we change a smelly one, followed by “green trash” because he knows the stinky ones need to go outside, followed by “no blue trash” because he knows they’re not recyclable. #captainplanet

He got his first hair cut. Before we went to the appointment I had these terrible mental movies playing of Chief thrashing around, trying to throw himself off the chair, and yelling “No Mom!” as I did my best to wrangle him back into the seat. Well…he did exactly the opposite. Typical. The dude was a statue. He sat perfectly still, never made a peep, and gave the barber the side-eye while he used the clippers on the sides of Chief’s head. Chief still talks about “Matt” and the “cold wa-wa” he sprayed on the top of his head before the trim.

He started pre-preschool. We call it baby school, where they teach him to be a good baby. He goes every Friday morning for 4.5 hours to Cochran Music Preschool. According to Chief, his favorite thing about school is the “choo-choos.” He has finger-painted with shaving cream and water-colored a ridiculously large squirrel and acorn that is proudly displayed on my refrigerator. I never thought I’d get so excited about messy artwork.

He was a ring bearer in Aunt LaLa’s wedding. Aunt LaLa married a cowboy in Ruidoso, New Mexico, on September 8. Chief was the ring bearer but all he really “beared” was a bucket of pinecones. I’m pretty sure he collected every “puh-pone” (pine cone) at the Flying J Ranch that weekend, and stuffed as many as he possibly could in his tiny, metal bucket. There was no negotiating with him to carry anything else. Dog was his “plus-one” and the two of them charmed the socks off of everyone in attendance. Chief played with his cousins, stayed up past his bedtime, fed deer by hand, watched elk “take a bath” in a creek, shared snacks with Big and Honey, and ran for miles through the mountains. He has been to the mountains 3 times in the last 3 months. He’s not going to know what to do when we stay in the flatlands for a while.

We hosted his second birthday party! Chief was the man of the hour as our nearest and dearest came to celebrate his two years Earth-side. We had family from New Mexico, family from Chelsea, extended family from Boston and Florida, and friends and family from around Norman all come together to shower our boy with love. The day turned out perfect and Chief was loving all the attention.

*I’ll do another post on his birthday party because I have way too many pictures I want to share.*

Mama Update

There are times when I see Chief as a 6 month old baby. Like when he’s sitting on his round, little bottom clutching Dog’s tail, and sucking on his right index and middle finger.

Then there are other times I look at him and think “who is this 5 year old in my living room?!”

Two is weird, y’all. One moment it looks like this…

And in the blink of an eye it looks like this…

He’s beginning to play like a little boy – driving trucks through the kitchen, burying Dad in a mountain of blocks, and taking his plastic dogs to school in a big, yellow school bus. He’s imaginative, he’s smart, he’s particular, he’s independent, and he knows exactly what he needs when he needs it. He gives the biggest hugs, the sweetest kisses, and the loudest protests. He’s the best. I’m convinced a better human has never been made.

His smile, his dimples, and his little scrunched nose are my Achilles heel. And he knows it. If I’m not giving in to his demands, one flash of those dimples and I melt like butter on a hot roll. It’s pathetic.

I am completely smitten with my two year old boy.

I’m thinking this will be the last monthly update post. I’ll still post when we do big things or Chief does something ridiculously cute, but I’m thinking I’m going to change how I structure these moving forward.

But I also told myself his one year post would be my last. I reserve the right to change my mind in a month. 🙂
