Can’t Get Enough Citrus Green Smoothie

February 5, 2014 by Cassie Leave a Comment

I have been SICK this last week. My symptoms started last Monday night. I went to the doctor that Wednesday morning and they told me what I already knew… bronchitis. I am a bronchitis magnet. I usually get it once a year, but have somehow escaped it the last 4. I’ve attributed this to my change in diet and increased intake of vitamins and minerals. It’s now been over a week since my first symptoms, and I am in no way 100%. This stuff hangs on.

I have been citrus crazy this last week, I can’t get enough of it! It’s amazing what the body craves when it needs specific nutrients. Also, to really blow your mind, did you know right now is peak citrus season?  I had always thought it was in the warmer months, but no, citrus is at its sweetest and juiciest in winter! Just when our body needs it most. Coincidence? I think not.

My poor husband has made multiple orange runs. We’ve been through navel oranges, blood oranges, clementines, tangerines, and tangelos.  If you’re curious about a tangelo, it’s a cross between a tangerine and a grapefruit. This was my first time purchasing one, and I wish I could give you a report.  Unfortunately, I’ve lost all sense of taste and smell, so the only thing I know is it has the texture of grapefruit.  Sorry, I’m no help. The last time I sent him to the store, he came home with a 5lb. bag of cuties from SAMS… I think he’s getting tired of his daily trips. Unfortunately, I’m working my way through this bag at a pretty good pace. 😉

See. I told you I was citrus crazy.

See. I told you I was citrus crazy.

Over the last week, this has been my go-to smoothie. I wake up CRAVING it. I’ve rotated the greens, and have used the frozen tropical fruit mix from Target once or twice, but it hits the spot every time.

Can’t Get Enough Citrus Green Smoothie (Print Me!)

Citrus Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • 1 LARGE handful of greens (I’ve used spinach, beet greens, and kale)
  • 1/2 cup coconut water
  • 1 (6oz.) container plain or vanilla yogurt (I’ve been using coconut milk yogurt, but any yogurt will do.  Just make sure it’s not über sweet.)
  • 1 whole orange (or two cuties)
  • 1/2 cup (ish) frozen pineapple (I’m a little heavy handed.)

Preparation

Blend your coconut water, greens, and yogurt until smooth.  Add your orange, blend again.  Add you frozen fruit and blend until smooth.  Optional- Add a few ice cubes to reach desired consistency.

Make sure you don’t brush your teeth right before drinking this smoothie!
