Bridgforths of Baker Street

July 22, 2015 by Cassie Leave a Comment

Its been a long time since I have done a house update. While our kitchen project has slowed down, we are still constantly working on things. The Carnivore and I worked on a few projects this weekend, so I thought this would be the perfect time to fill you in on what we’ve been up to.

1. Kitchen Seating

Our house doesn’t have an open floor plan. The kitchen doesn’t open up to the living space, but it does open up to our backyard. Our backyard is my favorite space, so I don’t even mind that the kitchen is closed from the rest of the house. When we moved in, I had grand plans to add a banquette in our little breakfast nook. 5 years later, I’ve got one! The Carnivore built this really great seating and it opens up with LOTS of storage! Why does storage space make me so happy?

Kitchen BanquetteMy custom made cushions and light fixture were installed this last week, so the only thing missing is a really great, worn farmhouse table. I’m in love with my little corner.

Maybe I can get The Carnivore to write a DIY banquette tutorial?!?

2. Controlling our forest.

I mentioned above the backyard is my favorite space. I should clarify. It is NOW my favorite space. When we moved in, it looked like Jumanji. Case in point…

The house had been vacant for 2 years before we purchased it, so the poor backyard looked more like a forest than a yard.

And it now looks like this. Labor of love, folks. Labor of love.

Pool PartyIf this gives you any idea as to what we were working with, after months and months of cutting down and clearing out trees and shrubs we still have 25 crepe myrtles in our backyard. No lie. 25!!!!! We trim them every spring, but because we’ve had so much rain this summer, they’re a bit unruly. I decided I would start trimming them on my own this weekend – with no supervision. I shouldn’t be allowed to handle sharp objects, y’all. I got into a fight with that pair of rusty gardening shears, and they won. They totally won. After a bandaged foot and a tetanus shot, I’m good to go. From now on, I leave the trimming to Chase.

2. New Siding.

Oh the joys of owning a foreclosed home. You seriously never know what you are going to find. Last summer we noticed that some siding on a portion of the bonus room didn’t quite look like the rest. Mismatched, but functionally it was fine. Fast forward to the torrential downpours we experienced for a solid month this year, and that patch of siding looked like this…

Siding ProjectMess.

We’ve had pieces of our house falling off for the last 2 months. We removed and repaired that siding with cement fiberboard this last weekend. New coat of paint, and it will look as good as new!

3. Paint, Paint, and More Paint.

I think our house is beginning to lose square footage with the amount of paint I’ve put on the walls. I get an itch for change and paint is the easiest way to do it! I know I can’t be alone on this…

I painted our entry way wall with this pattern when we first moved into the house. It took me two weeks to do, and I’ve been wanting to change it since the minute I finished.

PaintThe grey I picked looks purple! Greys are hard, y’all. This weekend I decided I had had enough. Time to change.

I’ll post an after picture as soon as I get my prints hung. Stay tuned!

And that was our weekend. Hope your’s was fabulous!
